So according to the 1920 US Census, this c.1871 Second Empire fixer upper was owned by Ernest and Rosa B. Wasson. Rosa came to Maine from Canada in 1904 and married Ernest, an electrician and painter.

By 1930, they had three children, Gerald, Dorothy and Madeline, but although still married, Ernest was no longer living in the home, which was worth $4,000 at that time.

As of 1940, Rosa was calling herself a widow. Dorothy had started a family of her own, so at this time, Rosa was sharing the house with Gerald (age 25), and Madeline (age 17). To help maintain the cost of running the household, a woman boarder, a high school teacher, was also on the premises.

Second Empires were dominant between 1860 and 1880, which puts the build date of our house today smack in the middle of the style’s popularity. Our home today, though, is on the plain side. About 30 percent of the style had rectangular or square towers. I love those. Tower or not, this Second Empire still makes my heart sing.
