103 Great Belt Rd, Butler, PA, 16002   $49,500 ~ Pending ~ Off Market

OHU50K NOTES

I love this fixer upper. Although the mailing address is Butler, the old farmhouse sits on almost one acre in rural Saxonburg (pop. 1,525). Sure the home needs plenty of work, but consider the beautiful exterior with two-story porches, arched windows, Palladian window in the gable and double front doors with sunburst glass overhead.
The interior boast wainscoting, floor-to-ceiling built-in, fireplace, arched doorways and hardwood floors. Some mechanical updates have already been completed per the realtor comments.

Saxonburg

I was excited to see Saxonburg’s history, as my family’s genealogy has a very loose connection with it.

The town was founded in 1832 by Freidrich Carl Roebling and his brother John A. Roebling as a German farming colony. In 1831, Roebling, an engineer, and a group of Prussians emigrated to the U.S. to escape political unrest. They came to Pennsylvania and purchased 1,582 acres of land in Saxonburg.

Farming was not Roebling’s passion, however, so he returned to his career as an engineer, eventually building the Brooklyn Bridge.

Here is where my family connection comes in. My husband’s third great-grandfather, William Delaney, an Irish immigrant, died while helping to build the bridge. In October of 1882, while pushing a wheelbarrow over a plank at the end of a work day, he lost his balance and fell to the pavement below. The Bridge Commission gave his widow and three children $25 and a job as a messenger to his younger son. (That son, John James Delaney, age 15, made huge headlines at the time for poisoning his girlfriend. The story behind it is so long and convoluted, I will reserve it for another day.)
