OHU50K NOTES

A map published by D.G. Beers in 1875 (shown below) has this building listed as “Store,” so we might assume that at least one side of the building was Talcottville’s general store. Talcottville is a tiny hamlet outside of Boonville where this building is actually located. It appears the other side of the structure was the Talcottville Grange Hall. According to a newspaper blurb, the  building still was the grange hall as late as 1961 when it was the place to get Salk’s polio vaccines. More recently the building was an antiques store.

An obituary from Findagrave.com about one of the Talcottville Grange members is pretty interesting.

Augustus Elexander Bourgeois died at 80 from a stroke at home in Talcottville.

His parents came from France 86 years ago. They came to Boonville by train in 1859. They walked to Lowville and then to Croghan, where they established a home.

In his younger years, Augustus conducted logging jobs in the vicinity of Croghan. For a few years the family lived in Carthage and for the last 52 years he engaged in farming near Talcottville.

He served as Justice of the Peace in the Town of Leyden for several years. He was a member of St. Martin’s Church, Port Leyden and was also a member of the Talcottville Grange. He was a successful farmer and was well known throughout Northern New York.

On June 19, 1886, he married Lucy Rose Potter of Natural

Bridge, the ceremony taking place at St. James Church, Carthage. Mrs. Bourgeois died several years ago.He was the father of 18 children, 14 of whom are still living. One daughter, Mrs. Loretta Ford died at Constableville a week ago today.

Surviving are these children: George, Ava; Willard and Carl, Boonville; Vincent, at home; Floyd, Camden; Stanley, Greig; Robert, Utica; Mrs. Florence Iseneker and Mrs. Walter Radell, Boonville; Mrs. Flossie Pace, Rochester; Misses Genevieve and Evelyn Bourgeois, Utica; Mrs. Lorena Cavanaugh, Constableville; and Mrs. Gladys Croniser, Locust Grove.

REALTOR COMMENTS

Just imagine an antique shop by day and a dance hall at night. This old antique shop also known as the grange hall could be the open concept building you are looking to fix up or restore for a new home or business. Just outside of Talcotville on Boonville Municipal power. This building has potential with hardwood floors, beautiful tin ceilings, and woodwork.
