Family History

Outland

This cottage was originally owned by John Outland (b.1857) and his wife Della (b.1858). In 1889, Mr. Outland was appointed postmaster of Woodland, North Carolina. The couple resided in the home into the 1930s.

Griffin

I believe William and Gertrude Griffin owned the home for a short time. William was a rural mail carrier.

Vaughn

By the late 1930s, Dr. Joseph Clinton Vaughan (1888-1945) and his wife, Martha Lavinia Conncell Vaughan (1895-2000), owned the home.  The couple lived here with their only child, Louise, Joseph served in WWI, and was a medical doctor whose office was the little white house on the property. He died in 1945 at the age of 57 and Martha inherited the house. Louise married a doctor, and eventually Martha sold the home before living out her life in Salisbury, North Carolina. She never remarried, and remained a widow for 55 years until her death in 2000 at age 105.
