The property now is back on the market with a new realtor and the old price of $65K. At $65K with acreage, I would be happy with just that beautiful barn, but with the striking house, this is a deal right up my alley. Note all the stunning original features that are still intact on this beauty. Plus, the taxes are not bad for New York, especially for this much land.

As one can tell by all the ornate touches to both the barn and the house, this was originally the property of a prosperous farmer. Per an old 1868 map, Isaac Talbot (1812-1886) owned a large parcel that encompassed land on both sides of the street and had a stream running through it. According to the 1850 US Census, Isaac was in ownership of the land before the build date of the c.1875 Italianate, so I surmise that a less grand house was the initial abode.

Isaac lived on the farm with his wife Caroline Colegrove and children Henry Clay, Laura, Eunice and Isaac. The farm was worth $7,000 in 1870.

After Isaac senior’s death in 1886, the farm was passed down to eldest son Henry Clay. He farmed the land with his wife Adelia and son Ebenezer at least until 1915. Upon Henry’s death in 1915, however, it appears the farm was sold out of the family.

The large extended Talbot family were early settlers from Rhode Island and established quite a few farms in the Edmeston area. A Talbot family plot is at the Taylor Hill Cemetery, about four miles north of the village.
