The structure is being offered for sale for the bargain price of $5,000. The catch: the house must be moved from its present location behind a 1977 ranch house and relocated to a new lot at the buyer’s expense. Two potential house sites on the existing farm near the original house site are available for sale by the present owner. Buyers could also move the house to an alternative site of their choosing, preferably in Jennings County.

Family research reveals that the house was constructed in 1878 from lumber harvested from the farm. Arista Frank Deputy was a schoolmaster and his family was among the earliest settlers in Jennings County. Zachariah Deputy, grandfather to Frank, purchased an initial tract of land here as early as 1815. The farm grew in size to its present 80 acres by 1895 and has remained in the family ever since.

The 1,104-square-foot, one-story, frame “folk Victorian” house features a distinctive front and side porch with turned posts and fretwork bracketing and spandrels. End chimneys feature partially exposed brick at the base of the walls. The interior includes 4 rooms and a full bathroom. Three of the rooms retain fireplaces with original mantels, doors, and woodwork, including surviving comb-grained faux-wood finishes. A large eat-in kitchen offers more modern finishes.

Jennings County is located in south central Indiana approximately 54 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky, 82 miles southeast of Indianapolis, and 83 miles west of Cincinnati, Ohio. The area is a mixture of wooded hills and open fields. The picturesque historic town of Vernon, the county seat, is a 20-minute drive away.
