c.1914 Five Bedroom Affordable Iowa Home $140K
OHU50K Notes $140,000
This five bedroom, 2.5 bathroom affordable Iowa home has an unbelievable amount of living space, with beautiful woodwork and classic charm. I love all the small drawers in the vintage kitchen cupboards, and the tiled fireplace with flanking glass-front bookcases, and that bathroom with the subway tile and penny tile are calling my name.

Realtor Comments
One of Oelwein’s most unique historic homes. The main floor consists of a spacious living room with a fireplace, a formal dining room, a four season sunroom, an eat-in kitchen with laundry, and a bedroom plus a 3/4 bath. The garage was converted into additional heated and cooled living space for a second main floor living room. The second floor has four bedrooms, one of which has a fireplace, as well as a full bath. There’s also a second story summer kitchen for additional space, and a walk-up attic. The lower level features the third fireplace in the den, along with a family room, a rec room, storage space, and a half bath. Outside, the covered deck leads to a small backyard and two stall detached garage, and the landscaped side yard has a gazebo and mature trees. Priced well below assessed value, this property has several possibilities as a commercial space, a short term rental/bed & breakfast, or a single family home.

Family History
This was the home of William Wachtel (1855-1914) and his wife Retta Wing Wachtel (1863-1920). The 1900 US Census lists Williams career as a capitalist. The couple raised their two sons in the home, Joseph and Harry. After William died in 1914, and then Retta in 1920, the home was passed down to son Harry, who lived there with his wife Mabel, and children Evelyn and Harry until 1956.
