History

As we noted above, this little home was once an outbuilding for the main house at 1425 W. 10th St. Both buildings were owned by John Dau (1883-1923). John lived in the home with his wife Helen (1883-1966), and eight children, Harry, Arnold, Eddie, Walter, Edna, Fred, Robert and George. Sadly, John came to a tragic end in 1923.

“Thirty hours after receiving bullet wounds in the body when a 38 caliber revolver he had been cleaning fell to the floor of his home, 1425 W. 10th St., and discharged Sunday afternoon, John Dau, 44, employee of the Independent Produce company, died at Davenport Hospital Monday night at 850. The accident occurred when Dau was placing the revolver on the top of the high cupboard in his living room, out of the reach of his children. He had returned home from dinner after working till 1:30, and after eating decided to clean his revolver. Deceased was born in Grand Island Nebraska January 25, 1880 and came to Davenport in his youth. His marriage to Ms. Helen Kovig took place here on October 21, 1902. Surviving besides his wife are eight children, Harry, Arnold, Eddie, Walter, Edna, Fred, Robert and George, his mother Mrs. Margaret Dau, two brothers Charles and Louis, and two sisters Mrs. Emma Schneider and Mrs. Sarah Nays, all of Davenport. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 230 from the Henry Runge the sons funeral parlors with burial in Fairmount cemetery.”

After John’s death, it appears Helen remained in the home and converted the carriage house to a residence. She lived there until about 1940. It later was used as a daycare.
