OHU50K NOTES

This old house in the McKinley Historic District of Newton, Kansas, is known as the Knowlton House. In 1882, the parcel was owned by Albert D. Knowlton who was born in Connecticut around 1841, came to Newton and opened a hardware store. He lived here with his wife Annie, his son P.H. and daughter Zella until his death in 1900. In 1910, Dennis and Emma Huntington were listed here. It appears they sold their Wisconsin farm, and relocated to Newton where Dennis became a landlord before retiring.

The Italianate was built around 1880, and the garage addition about 1920. The house has a shallow hipped roof and an irregular plan. Although the exterior might be considered on the plain side for an Italianate, and the interior has had some modifications, the home is a beauty just the same.
