Family History

This was originally the home of Byron William Ayers (1841-1882). Byron was a real estate agent and city council member who died before his 41st birthday of consumption. He left behind a large family including his wife, Mary Augusta McCrillis Ayers (1843-1931), and daughters Edith, Gertrude, Ada, Anna and Helen. An infant child passed away at birth.

“Byron W. Ayers, whose serious illness was noted in a late issue of the Register, died at half past seven o’clock Sunday evening, of consumption. Mr. Ayers was born in the state of Ohio, on the 19th of August, 1841, and was therefore nearly forty one years of age at the time of his death. He came to this city when a child, grew up to manhood here and here married and reared a family. For three years he served the people of the third Ward in the city council, and was one of the most active members of that body. He leaves a wife and five children, to whom he was a kind husband and indulgent father, and these have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. The funeral services will be held at the Central Baptist church, at two o’clock this afternoon, after which the remains will be taken in charge by the Masonic fraternity and buried with the honors of that order. After the death of Byron, the family continued to live in the home for at least seven more decades. All of the daughters never married and lived in the home together. Helen died at age three, Gertrude died at age 24, Anna at age 28, and Edith at age 70. The last sister to live there was Ada. She was a retired teacher at the time of her death at age 78 in 1948. A lot of deaths occurred in this house.

Upon Ada’s death, the house went through a couple of hands. It was an office in the late 1990s, and in the early 200s it housed a gift shop.
