At this time the principal business activity was in the cattle trade and large herds of cattle from northern Texas, Indian Territory and Oklahoma were driven from the pastures in those states, north to the nearest railroad point from where they were shipped to the eastern markets.
George N. Moses was one of the pioneers in this business and drove the first herd of cattle to pass through Great Bend from Texas to Newton in 1872.
