c.1890 Foreclosure Hoosick Falls NY $20K ~ Sold

This c.1890 foreclosure is located in Hoosick Falls, NY (pop. 3,501). On occasion, OHU50K might feature a property simply to educate about an area. Although this property has curb appeal, the interior has lost its 1890’s appeal. A bigger issue, however, is at hand in Hoosick Falls. Both my mother and sister owned homes and lived in the village for decades. My other sister lived in the next town over, Cambridge, but worked in the Hoosick Falls school system.

I know the community well. It is located in a beautiful area, just a short drive to Bennington, Vermont. So what’s the problem. In 1955, Dodge Fibers Corporation, began manufacturing Teflon-based products. They were quite successful and subsequently sold to larger companies, which, unbeknownst to the local residents, generated chemical pollution into the water system. When it was discovered in 2014 that Hoosick Falls residents were having an unusually high incidence of cancers, concern developed. In December of 2015, the city advised residents to use bottled water provided for free by Saint-Gobain, the current owner of the plastics facilities.

Both my sisters and my mother developed cancer while living in Hoosick Falls. Luckily, they are all survivors of the disease.
