OHU50K NOTES

It’s a simple house, but it offers built-ins, hardwood floors and a clawfoot tub.  Note the two different siding materials. Per Inspectapedia.com: Asphalt siding became a popular building renovation alternative to painting weathered or rotted wood clapboard or wood shingle siding as early as the 1930’s, becoming popular in the 1940’s and the 1950’s in North America where it was used both for low-cost housing and for covering the deteriorated exterior walls of older homes.

The bottom half of the house is covered with asbestos siding. Asbestos received its US patent in 1907 and was popular in the states through the 1950s. In 1989 asbestos became illegal when The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued an Asbestos Ban and Phase-Out Rule.

Family History

In the 1920s James Halloday and his wife Ida lowned the home. They lived here with their young daughter Thelma. James was born in Pennsylvania and worked as a mill hand at the knitting mill. They lived next door to the elderly widowed sisters, Elizabeth and Alvira Klock, descendants of Johannes Klock, who in 1750 built Fort Klock, a historic fortified house on the outskirts of town.
