The town was established around zinc mining (Weir City Zinc Company in 1873), and local families, including the Hamiltons, were involved in this early industry and community growth. They also owned a store.  In 1905, four members of the family owned automobiles, unusual for so early in the century. The three Hamilton sister houses were all built for the Hamilton family. One was demolished and another across the street is in bad shape.
