History

Built about 1900, this is the Hyde House and Store. It is located in the Buchanan Historic District. The commercial space served as the original home of the Buchanan National Bank, which was established in the early 1900s. Faint shadows of the original gilt bank sign can still be spotted on the storefront windows under specific weather conditions. The upper and attached residential quarters served as the home of Upshur Hayes Hyde, Sr. (1866-1936), who was a president of the Buchanan National Bank. Mr. Hyde lived in the home with is wife Leila, children Frank, James. Paul, Beatrice, Upshur Jr, a sister-in-law and a servant.
