History
The congregation’s first rector, the Rev. C.S. Ware, and Bishop Mahlon Norris Gilbert laid the cornerstone of the church on August 19, 1891. Construction was completed later that same year, at a cost of $6,000. The first Episcopal service was held in 1893, but it wasn’t dedicated until 1897 when the mortgage was paid in full.
Per dglobe.com, “Composed of Sioux quartzite, the structure was built by the Hinkly family of Luverne, who owned the quarry in what is now Blue Mounds State Park. According to a historical brochure about the church, quarrymen sawed the large rock into rough blocks, which were dragged to a stonecutter’s shed adjacent to the church site. The stonecutter hand-dressed the rough blocks into symmetrical rectangles, which were then laid with “an artistry and precision that eclipses masonry techniques of today.”
The church’s woodwork, including the beams, chancel, communion rail and floor, was also handcrafted from oak. The windows in the church were made and shipped over from England, and gifts from parishioners helped to furnish the church.”
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and is the only church on the NRHP in Rock County. It is the oldest church standing in Luverne, and By 2016, the congregation was down to just three members.
