4337 DE Soto Ave, Saint Louis, MO 63107
$14,000 ~ SOLD
OHU50K is featuring this fixer today not in the hopes that it will sell anytime soon. St. Louis is a hard sell due to the crime stats. We all know that. Look at the neighborhood. Although the home across the street is lovely, our featured house is surrounded by vacant lots.
So why are we featuring this home? 1. Second Empire is my personal favorite architectural style. 2. We don’t often find Second Empires under our price constraints. And 3. Some may not be aware of the Second Empire terminology.
Second Empire styling is dominated by the mansard roof, with the style having its height of popularity between 1860 and 1880. The style was used a lot for townhouses as it allowed for a room behind the steep roofline, and square footage directly under the roof was not subject to taxes back then. Originally called the Grant style, after President Ulysses S. Grant, that name fell out of favor in the south and was eventually forgotten elsewhere.
The interior of this Second Empire has been severely modified. It is amazing that the 1930’s linoleum rugs are still there. The front facade, with its slate roof, arched windows and brick dentil work, is simply lovely.
