History
- 1895: Originally organized as a congregation of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ at 231 S. Ninth St. in Salina.
- 1946: Became the First Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church following the merger of the United Brethren and Evangelical denominations.
- 1968: Merged into the United Methodist denomination, eventually transitioning its ministry and location to become the modern Church of the Cross, UMC.
- Around 2010: Converted into a 2-family home.

Pros
- Affordable housing. A roughly $173K median home value is well below the U.S. median, making homeownership considerably more attainable than in many parts of the country.
- Low overall cost of living. Housing is particularly inexpensive, while everyday expenses are generally below national averages.
- Excellent location for driving. Salina sits at the intersection of I-70 and I-135, making it unusually convenient for reaching Wichita, Topeka, Kansas City and western Kansas.
- Very easy commutes. The average commute is under 15 minutes.
- More jobs than you’d expect. Salina is a regional employment center, with healthcare, manufacturing, aviation, education, transportation/distribution, retail and services providing a relatively diversified economy.
- Good healthcare for a city its size. Salina serves as a medical hub for north-central Kansas.
- Good parks. Oakdale Park, Indian Rock Park Salina Kansas and Sunset Park give residents plenty of green space and recreation.
- Better restaurant scene than you’d expect. Downtown has locally owned places such as Martinelli’s Little Italy, YaYa’s Euro Bistro and Blue Skye Brewery and Eats.
- Good everyday shopping. There are grocery stores, big-box stores and shopping centers, so you don’t have to drive to Wichita for ordinary errands.
- Schools are generally solid. Niche gives Salina public schools a B, with several individual schools receiving B+ or better.
- Community feel. It’s large enough to have amenities but small enough that the city doesn’t feel overwhelming.
- Relatively educated population. About 28.7% of adults have a bachelor’s degree or higher, and 93.1% have at least a high-school diploma.
Cons
- Crime isn’t as low as you might expect from a small Kansas city. Niche gives Salina a C for crime and safety. More recent 2025 data showed property crime remained above the Kansas average, although total crime has declined substantially over the past five years.
- Limited big-city entertainment. There are restaurants, local events, parks and downtown activities, but you’re not getting major concerts, professional sports or a huge nightlife scene.
- Young adults may find it boring. If you’re looking for clubs, large music venues, extensive nightlife or lots of people in their 20s, Salina can feel slow.
- Car-dependent. The short commute is great, but public transportation isn’t a major selling point.
- Population isn’t growing much. Salina had about 46,889 people in 2020 and an estimated 46,094 in 2025.
- Lower salaries. Median household income is around $61,800, substantially below the national median. The inexpensive housing helps offset this, but specialized high-paying careers can be harder to find locally.
- Hot summers. Kansas summers can be hot, humid and windy.
- Severe weather risk. Like much of Kansas, you’re dealing with thunderstorms, high winds, hail and tornado risk.
- Not particularly walkable overall. Downtown is relatively walkable, but most errands will require a vehicle.
- Less cultural diversity than a major metro. The city is about 81% White, with Hispanic/Latino residents making up about 13.8%.
- Somewhat older population. About 18.5% of residents are 65+, so the city can feel quieter and older than a college-heavy city.
