Cherryvale has some disturbing history.  In the founding of the town, the Osage Indians were pushed off their land by Civil War veterans looking for fertile acreage. They named the community Cherryvale for its position in the valley of Cherry Creek.

The Cherryvale area is also known as the site of one of the country’s first serial killer families. Between 1871 and 1873, at least eleven people disappeared around the vicinity of an inn and general store owned by the Bender family. Following the vanishing of the Benders in 1873, it was revealed that the murderous clan had actually slaughtered a number of travelers who had frequented their businesses. Between eight and eleven bodies were found buried on their premises. The governor at the time, Thomas A. Osborn, offered a $2,000 reward for the apprehension of the Bender family, but they were never found.

The same year that the Benders disappeared, the main section of the town was destroyed by fire. It was later rebuilt.
