OHU50K NOTES

This beautiful Queen Anne Victorian house for sale initially captured my heart because of its exterior yellow paint job (I love yellow house), imbricated gable shingles and wrap-around porch. When I entered the front door, my heart swelled even more. Look at the amazing natural woodwork! Even the second floor woodwork has been left untouched. I would have preferred the columns would have been kept intact going into the room with the bay window, but we can’t have everything at this price point. The staircase with built-in bench is gorgeous, though.

Home History

It is often difficult to research these old homes because house numbers sometimes change over the decades as property is sold off and newer builds get interspersed in the block. I believe, however, that this Queen Anne might have been the home of Hugh Donley  and his wife Martha. They lived here with their adult sons Porter and Henry. Hugh worked in the clerk’s office, as did Henry, and Porter was in real estate collection.

Town History

Our featured home was built in 1896, 15 years after Eagle Grove (pop. 3,583) was platted in 1881. Per Wikipedia:

Eagle Grove was named from the eagle nests seen by early settlers in a nearby Oak tree grove perched above the bank of the Boone River. In 1851 Mr. N. B. Paine moved to Wright County, purchased property and constructed a log cabin that stood directly west of the grove. The nest was over six feet in diameter. The eagles settled in the nest in the spring and summer of 1855-56, however, in the spring of 1857 they were shot and killed by a trapper. Thus Eagle Grove was named in honor of these eagles.
