This area of Amsterdam was largely settled by Italian immigrants in the early 1900s. It appears that this house, located on a corner lot, began life as a rental property with two units. One of its earliest tenants was William Richard, a rib knitter at the knitting factory. he shared his apartment with his wife Anna. The other half of the house was rented to John Trayby, a machinist, and his wife Carrie. They lived with their adult children, Jacob, a machinist, and Lillian, a telephone operator. A series of renters resided here over the decades, with rent in 1930 being $20 per month.
