Early history of the church

According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, Lexa developed as a railroad town in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

  • 1880: A post office was established in the community, originally named Lexington.

  • 1885: The community’s name was shortened to Lexa.

  • 1908: The Missouri Pacific Railroad established service shops near the Lexa depot.

  • 1909–1914: Lexa experienced considerable growth, with hotels, stores, a restaurant, boarding houses, and more than 100 residences.

  • Early 1900s: A Methodist church was established, followed shortly afterward by a Baptist church.

The Methodist congregation was therefore part of the community’s early growth, rather than a church established only after Lexa had become a declining rural settlement.

The church during the 1920s and 1930s

Lexa’s fortunes changed considerably after the railroad closed its depot in 1921 and relocated its repair shops to Helena over the following four years.

The town was also heavily affected by the devastating 1927 Mississippi River Flood. The American Red Cross assisted thousands of flood refugees in the Lexa area.

The Methodist church would have been an important part of community life during this period, serving residents through worship, Sunday school, and church activities.
