c.1901 Fixer Upper Victorian Upstate NY ~ Absolutely Gorgeous $42K ~ Sold
1702 State Highway 8, Mount Upton, NY 13809 $42,000 ~ Sold
OHU50K NOTES
This fixer upper is absolutely gorgeous! Except for an original kitchen, practically all of the original architectural elements remain. The paneling is amazing! Can’t complain about the New York taxes here, either. Ninety-eight dollars a month is very reasonable for the state.
History of the House
The Victorian beauty was the home of the superintendent of the Borden Dairy plant, later known as Dairylea. Old photos of the home and plant are included below. Subsequently, a long line of families owned the home, including the Gilmore, O’Dell and Heath families. I believe the Mueller family owned it the longest, from the 1960s through the early 1980s.
Sometime before 1962 the garage was built. Then in 1964, the new Route 8, on which this home is located, was constructed, making it a main thoroughfare to surrounding towns.
Town
Mt. Upton is a hamlet along the Unadilla River, rich land for all the farmers who originally lived here. Up until the mid-1920s, the hamlet also was known as a horse trading center. In fact, Lady Upton, the famous race horse, lived here. You can find a monument honoring her in the village. Photo below.
