OHU50K NOTES

Doesn’t this old schoolhouse for sale in Monson, Maine, draw you in?

History

This “new” Burma school, as opposed to the “old” Burma school which was closed and demolished, was built somewhere between 1904 and 1906. The Burma school district was mainly populated by children of Swedish and Finnish immigrants until the 1930s when it became a wagon wheels shop. Then in 1935 the Finnish Farmers Club, a club dedicated to preserving Finnish heritage, took over the building,

For a few years the club was very active with dances, festivals and potluck dinners. WWII took away many of the men, however, and even after the war, younger families relocated to other parts of New England for better employment opportunities.

By 1979 the Finnish Club needed to be rescued from property tax liens, so the members  took to fundraising with plenty of suppers, raffles and yard sales. They were able to earn enough funds for a new paint job, drilled well, new roof, addition and outdoor lighting.

Sadly, membership continued to dwindle, and by 2013 it had become a camp for a private resident.

Only three, of the original eight, one-room schoolhouses still stand in Monson. Let’s hope someone can do the foundation work needed to restore this little piece of history.

REALTOR COMMENTS

Monson: Recreational camp, formerly old schoolhouse for sale. Located on a nice year round road near Lake Hebron. Large camp with lots of rooms including kitchen, living room, dining area, upstairs bedrooms, plus additional bedroom and storage space downstairs.

Heated with wood stoves and propane, camp has drilled well, privy, nice lot with plenty of parking. Fishing, hunting, short distance to beach…Camp needs some jacking and leveling but could be a great getaway in the heart of Maine. All kinds of Character!
