c.1904 Great Northern Railway Wooden Caboose For Sale in WI $11K

OHU50K NOTES

I always wanted a caboose in my backyard. I requested a facsimile when my husband was building a chicken coop, but he built a little red schoolhouse coop instead. Very cute! This c.1904 wooden caboose has so many possibilities, I could not resist featuring it today. Tiny house, cabin, guest house, she shed,  take-out restaurant, shop …. you name it.  Looks like it is great shape. Pickup locale is Dalton, Wisconsin.

History

Per Wikipedia:

The Great Northern Railway was an American Class I railroad. Running from Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Seattle, Washington, it was the creation of 19th-century railroad entrepreneur James J. Hill and was developed from the Saint Paul & Pacific Railroad. The Great Northern’s route was the northernmost transcontinental railroad route in the U.S.

In 1970 the Great Northern Railway merged with three other railroads to form the Burlington Northern Railroad, which merged in 1996 with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to form the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway.

The Great Northern was the only successfully built privately funded transcontinental railroad in U.S. history. No federal subsidies were used during its construction, unlike all other transcontinental railroads.

c.1904 Great Northern Railway Wooden Caboose For Sale in WI $11K

As pictured, original 1904 Great Northern Caboose.  Trucks have already been removed for transport.  $5,000 spent on rubber roof, rafters and restoring cupola. Perfect for someone looking to restore a caboose, cabin in the woods, or tiny home.  This is a wood caboose, not heavy metal like most cabooses built past 1940.  Ideal for your unique business idea as well!

This has decks on front and rear, but one was removed for transport but I have it and it can be reattached.  I do have a lot of the original caboose accoutrements as shown in the photos section. I do not have the trucks.  Solid wood construction built in the early 1900’s!  What a history this little caboose had traveling the great north and northwest.

Here are some dimensions worth note.  INSIDE floor dimensions are approximately 8’4″ x 24’5″.  Ceiling height ranges from approximately 79″ to 83″, of course much higher in the cupola whose footprint is 78×60.

Transport, I had a company move it to its current location.  I think they used a low boy, or break-away trailer.  I think a shed mover or tiny house mover could have done the job as well.  If memory serves the caboose is 11ft 6inches tall but the buyer can check and double check the dimensions.  It’s located in Dalton WI 53926.  It’s sold ‘as is’ of course so I would prefer the buyer inspect it prior to purchase.  Not too many 116 year olds are in this good of shape!  Own a part of railroad history.    Balance due via bank transfer or cashier’s check within 3 days.  I don’t do paypal.  Thanks.

Please note:  I will supply shipping/transport assistance only after caboose is paid for.

Free storage for 30 days.
