OHU50K NOTES
If small town living is your thing, this fixer upper in Danbury, Nebraska, should fit the bill. The town’s population is only 101 people. It has a granary ,a post office and a smattering of house, and that’s about it. The post office, in fact, was established in 1888 and was named after Danbury, Connecticut, the former hometown of the first postmaster. It’s the hub of the town.
As for the house, the exterior has much of its original elements. I love all the fretwork, and it is amazing that grandma’s screen door has survived. Can’t say the same for the interior. The inside offers French doors, original doors and some trim, a lovely newel post and perhaps hardwood floors under the carpeting. But the interior needs plenty of undoing as well to bring the home back to its former glory.
According to 1930 US Census, the house appears to have been owned by Reed M. Henton, a life insurance salesman, and his wife Sadie. They lived there with their young daughter Enid. The house was worth $2,500 in 1920, and the Hentons owned a radio set. Before purchasing the home, the young family lived on Reed’s father’s farm, where Reed worked the farm.
Reed was from a family of nine children who all worked their dad’s farm at one time or another. Reed’s brother Burr Henton, and nephew Bob Henton were professional ball players for a short time. I can imagine Burr practicing his pitch against the barn doors for hours on end. After his stint as a pitcher, Burr spent most of his life, however, working on his dad’s and uncle’s farms before working 33 years as a brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad.
