Family History
In the 1920s and ’30s, this was the home of William Alton, a glass blower who came from England to Sandusky in 1889. He owned the home with his wife Sylvia Krieger Alton and lived here with his daughters, Elizabeth and Lillian. In fact, in 1933 a delightful engagement party was held at the home for Liilian. Per the 1930 US Census, the home was valued at $6,500 that year – about $106,450 in today’s dollars.
In 1950, Mr. and Mrs. George Kaitsa left Communist-dominated Estonia by way of Germany to settle in Sandusky, and sometime after that purchased this home. Their daughter, Lillian, made the Sandusky Register news when in 1965 she became a United States citizen. Her brother George also made the news several times. He was an excellent student who won a scholarship, and he also volunteered his time working with children at Headstart.
