OHU50K NOTES
It was a long distance and a far cry from Vermont when J.W. Long journeyed from his home state to settle in White County, Nevada, in 1878. After discovering gold, however, he set up a camp in Ely, marking the start of Ely’s history as a gold and copper mining town, and with mining came the railroad. Most likely, copper miners once lived in this c.1907 hipped roof fixer upper bungalow.
Although Ely (pop. 4,255) is a copper boom town still today, the railroad acts only as a preserved heritage railway known as the Ghost Train of Old Ely.
Ely has a semi-arid climate with extreme day-night temperature differences year-round. The town’s nighttime temps account for it being counted as one of the coldest places in the contiguous United States, with an average of 217 nights per year with a minimum temperature of 32 °F or less. Frosts have been recorded in every month of the year, even July. Elevation, dry air, clear skies and location in a valley account for its climate.
