History of War, West Virginia
War is a small town (pop. 690) located in McDowell County, West Virginia, with a fascinating history tied to coal mining and Appalachian culture. The town was established in the early 1900s during the coal boom that transformed southern West Virginia.
War got its unusual name not from any military conflict, but reportedly from War Creek, which ran red with iron deposits resembling blood. Another theory suggests it was named after a heated dispute between early settlers. The town was officially incorporated in 1920.
Like many communities in McDowell County, War experienced tremendous growth during the coal mining boom of the early-to-mid 20th century. The population peaked around the 1950s when coal was king in the region. After that, as coal mining declined, the town experienced the economic hardships common throughout Appalachia.
War holds the distinction of being the southernmost incorporated town in West Virginia, tucked into the mountains near the Virginia and Kentucky borders.
