Family History
The home was originally owned by Robert Cummings Sr. (1892-1925) and his wife Edna Dillon Cummings. Sadly in 1925, Robert died from pneumonia at the young age of 33, leaving behind his widow and four young children. Edna remarried around 1927, and from 1927 to 1960, the bungalow was owned by Edna and her new husband John McCrory (1866-1960). With only an 8th grade education, John was a laborer for the Works Progress Adminstration (WPA). Despite making a meager living, the McCrorys made do and shared the small home to Edna’s large family. In the ’30s and ’40s, John and Edna resided in their the 2-bedroom, 1-bath bungalow with their shared young children, Arnold and Margaret, Edna’s young adult son from a previous marriage, Robert Cummings who also worked as a laborer for the WPA, as well as his wife and their toddler daughter. When the couple became empty nesters in the 1950s, they apparently rented out a room to boarders. On several occasions McCrory called the police on these boarders for disorderly contact.
