OHU50K NOTES
Located in the Calumet Historic District, this c.1910 Michigan handyman special has loads of original architectural details ready for restoration. I absolutely adore that floor-to-ceiling pantry cupboard!
Calumet (pop. 727) is one of those small towns that you have to visit at least once. Nestled in the Keweenaw Peninsula, the village was once at the heart of the copper mining industry. Back in 1900 the thriving town had a population of 4,668, and Red Jacket, as it was known until 1929, had a thriving downtown. Calumet takes pride in its architectural heritage, and the downtown district is a wonderful place to visit.
One tragic story that I found heartbreaking occurred during the Mining Strike of 1913. It was that year in which the introduction of a one-man drill drastically cut Red Jacket’s workforce. To bring some joy to the town, the Women’s Auxiliary organized a Christmas Eve party in the second floor of the Italian Hall. Witness reports indicate that someone shouted, “FIRE!” whereupon the crowd of partygoers rushed to the egress of the steep stairway. Crushed by the panicked people at the top, those at the bottom suffocated.
The fire department arrived to find there was no fire, but instead found 74 bodies, 60 of them children. The town’s collective heart was broken, and Calumet mourned for years to come. Whoever owned 26054 Church Street back then most likely knew someone who had perished. I would not want to be the person who sounded the false alarm. He has a lot to answer for.

REALTOR COMMENTS
Once a grand historic home in Calumet, this three-story mining home is a handyman special in need of a new owner. It has a hot water, steam boiler, and some of the plumbing and electrical has been updated. Although a lot of it has been painted over, the old trim and woodwork remains, along with hardwood floors. The main floor has a pantry (was last used as a bathroom, still has hookups) with built in cupboards, a dining room, living room and large parlor room with fireplace.
Second floor of this c.1910 handyman special has four bedrooms, a full bath and dressing room off the bathroom. The third floor has a bedroom, a full bath and a sitting/family room. There is updating and work to be completed, but this could be a lovely home when done. The bathroom fixtures have been disconnected for remodel, and kitchen cabinets are not installed, but all are in the home. Located within blocks of the school and shopping, with a large yard fronting two streets. A great location, a great home, and a great price. Come and see this opportunity! Home is being sold AS-IS. Sellers are MI licensed Realtors.
