Niche

Here are the main pros and cons of living in the Central Park neighborhood area of Topeka, KS.

Pros

  • Good access to central Topeka conveniences: You’re usually not far from shopping, services, and major roads.
  • More “neighborhood feel” than outlying areas: Often closer to schools, parks, and local community spots.
  • Established residential areas: Many homes are older/character-rich; some streets tend to have more consistent upkeep and community presence.
  • Potential value depending on block: In many parts of Topeka, certain pockets can offer stronger rent/home value than you might expect.

Cons

  • Block-by-block variation: With Topeka neighborhoods, conditions (appearance, noise, traffic, street lighting) can change noticeably from one street to the next.
  • Older housing stock: You may deal with things like older plumbing/electrical, maintenance needs, or insulation/utility costs—especially if buying.
  • Parking/traffic issues can vary: Some streets can have more through-traffic, cut-through driving, or limited off-street parking depending on the layout.
  • Property condition/maintenance differences: Some areas can have more visible differences in how well homes are maintained, which can affect your day-to-day experience.

History

In 1905, the lots in this neighborhood were selling for $200 with payment plans available. It appears our featured house was one of the first to be built and was used as a model home. Robert F. Tasker (1878-1947), register of deeds for Shawnee County, was the first owner of this house. He lived here with his wife, Ota Chambers Tasker (1184-1946) and children Frances and Robert.
