carnegie library for sale

c.1911 Fixer Upper Carnegie Library For Sale in Kansas Under $58K

$57,500

Some of us would love to call this Carnegie Library for sale our home despite the tremendous work needed to convert it. It is a shame that of the approximately 1,689 public libraries originally funded by Andrew Carnegie in the U.S., many have been demolished,  converted to other uses, or simply left to stand neglected, so that only about 800 still operate today as libraries.

History

The Carnegie Library in Coffeyville, Kansas, has a rich history rooted in the broader Carnegie library movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist, funded the construction of over 2,500 libraries worldwide, with the goal of promoting education and self-improvement.

In Coffeyville, the library was established through a grant from the Carnegie Corporation. The city received $20,000 from Carnegie in 1911 to build the library, with the condition that the city would provide a suitable site and commit to funding its ongoing operation. The Coffeyville community met these requirements, and the library was completed in 1912.

The Carnegie Library in Coffeyville was designed in the Classical Revival style, which was typical of many Carnegie libraries. The building featured a symmetrical façade, large windows for natural light, and an inviting, open interior designed to encourage public use. Over the years, it became an important cultural and educational center for the community.

The library served the Coffeyville community for many decades, offering access to books, periodicals, and other resources. As with many Carnegie libraries, it was more than just a place to borrow books; it was a hub for community events, educational programs, and civic engagement.

In later years, as the library outgrew its original space, the city eventually moved the library to a new, larger facility. The original Carnegie Library building still stands as a historical landmark in Coffeyville, reflecting the legacy of Carnegie’s vision and the community’s commitment to education and public service.
