Family History

This was the home of Charles Levin, Jr. (1880-1931). Charles was a plumber. He lived in the home with his wife Josephine, and their daughter Cecil.  Cecil was a happy young girl who enjoyed hosting parties for her friends. As an adult, however, her life was cut short. She was married twice, the second a drunkard, and passed away in April of 1942 at the age of 34 of a heart attack at this home. Her 8-year-old daughter, Charlotte, was then taken away by court order from her drunkard stepfather, and custody was given to biological father. With that, the young Charlotte was to inherit the estate of this and another house from her grandmother Josephine Levin.

  • Housing costs are also relatively affordable, with median home prices significantly lower than the U.S. average.

2. Diverse & Family‑Friendly Community

Waterloo is among the most diverse places in Iowa, with a mix of cultures, backgrounds, and ages contributing to community life.

3. Community Amenities & Activities

  • There’s a lively downtown with shops, restaurants, and cultural venues.

  • Parks, outdoor recreation trails, and sites like the Waterloo Center for the Arts add variety to local life.

4. Schools & Neighborhood Variation

Some neighborhoods offer historic homes and strong local identity, and average school performance in parts of the city is competitive — though it varies by area.

5. Moderate Commute Times

Commuting in Waterloo is generally shorter than in larger metro areas, and the city has basic public transit connecting neighborhoods.

6. Mid‑Sized City With a Small‑City Feel

Waterloo offers a mix of amenities you’d expect in a mid‑sized city (schools, hospitals, entertainment) while still maintaining a more relaxed Midwestern pace. Community reviews often note that many areas are quiet and friendly.

Cons of Living in Waterloo, IA

1. Crime Rates Are Higher Than Average

Waterloo’s crime statistics — especially for violent and property crime — are above state and national averages, and safety can vary greatly by neighborhood. Residents and public data both indicate that some parts of the city experience elevated risks relative to similarly sized cities.

2. Lower Income Levels & Economic Challenges

  • Median household income in Waterloo is below national averages, and unemployment rates are somewhat higher.

  • Economic growth has been uneven, and some residents cite limited local job opportunities outside traditional sectors.

3. Mixed School Performance

School quality differs across neighborhoods: some schools score well while others are average or below average. This means families often weigh the choice of district carefully when deciding where to live.

4. Population Trends & Some Local Perceptions

Waterloo has experienced modest population decline in parts of the city, and public sentiment is mixed — with some residents praising community and affordability, and others critiquing economic stagnation or limited nightlife/events.

5. Urban Pockets With Challenges

Like many cities, some neighborhoods have higher crime, lower upkeep, or concentrated poverty; choosing the right area is often key to a good resident experience. Neighborhood data shows variation in safety and livability across the city.

6. Weather

Waterloo’s climate includes hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters, which aren’t to everyone’s taste — especially if you prefer mild weather year‑round.
