Pros of living in Chenoa

• Very affordable housing. The 2024 median owner-occupied home value was about $124,700, dramatically below both Illinois and U.S. levels. Homeownership is also high at 82.7%.
• Great location for commuters. Chenoa sits at the intersection of I-55, U.S. 24 and Historic Route 66, making it convenient for getting toward Bloomington-Normal, Pontiac and other Central Illinois communities.
• Small-town atmosphere. With roughly 1,650 residents, it’s quiet, less congested and more community-oriented than Bloomington-Normal.
• Good outdoor/recreational options for a town its size. Silliman Lake Park offers fishing and boating, while Main City Park and the community pool provide additional recreation.
• A few genuinely good local businesses. For example, Chenoa Family Restaurant and OB’s Cervezaria give the town some local dining options rather than being entirely dependent on chain restaurants.
• Potential for growth. Local officials have been discussing commercial development around the I-55/Route 66 area, including interest in roughly 65 acres near the interstate
• Reasonable commute times. The average commute is around 25.5 minutes, although that assumes you’re driving.

Cons

• Very limited amenities. This is probably the biggest drawback. You won’t have the shopping, restaurants, entertainment, healthcare and services you’d get in Bloomington-Normal. Chenoa essentially requires a car for most errands; there is no local public transportation.
• Schools are a concern for families. Chenoa’s schools are part of the Prairie Central district, and the district plans to close its Chenoa pre-K–1 school and consolidate elementary education in Fairbury. This could mean longer school transportation and is worth investigating carefully if you have children.
• Limited local job market. Chenoa is small and economically tied to agriculture, transportation and nearby cities. The median household income is about $65,800, below Bloomington-Normal and Illinois overall.
• Car dependency. If you like being able to walk to coffee shops, grocery stores, restaurants, gyms, etc., Chenoa probably won’t suit you.
• Not much nightlife or entertainment. There are local bars/restaurants, but you’ll generally drive to Bloomington-Normal or another larger town for major shopping, movies, concerts, specialty dining, etc.
• Some economic vulnerability. Current Census estimates put poverty at around 21%, considerably higher than the Bloomington-Normal metro and Illinois overall. The small population also means fewer services and less economic diversity.
• Older/small-town housing stock. You can get a lot of house for your money, but inexpensive houses aren’t necessarily inexpensive to maintain. I’d pay particular attention to roofs, foundations, HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems when looking at properties.
