Family History

This was the home of William Dienst (1880-1970), who owned a billiards establishment, was elected Sheriff in 1939, and ended his career as a parks and recreation weeds supervisor. The Dienst family, which consisted of first wife Nellie (1885-1956) and children Doris and John lived in the home for about 50 years.  Doris loved to entertain her Bridge Club in the home.

  • The cost of living index is around 79 (U.S. average = 100), and housing costs are about half the national average.

  • Median home price is often below $80,000–$90,000, making it one of the more affordable markets in Kansas.

2. Small-Town, Tight-Knit Community

  • With about 10,000 residents, Parsons offers a friendly, slower-paced lifestyle.

  • People tend to know their neighbors, and community events, fairs, and local sports are central to social life.

3. Short Commute Times

  • The average commute is about 10–11 minutes, which means less time in traffic and more flexibility.

4. Parks and Green Space

  • The Parsons Arboretum, Marvel Park, and other local trails make it easy to enjoy the outdoors.

Cons

1. Crime Concerns

  • Crime rates are higher than the U.S. average, especially property crime.

  • Violent crime has improved in recent years but still ranks above state averages.

  • Residents often suggest being selective about neighborhoods.

2. Limited Job Market

  • The local economy is small and slow-growing.

  • Major employers include the Parsons State Hospital, local schools, and some manufacturing, but opportunities are limited.

  • Many residents commute to nearby towns for work.

3. Economic Challenges

  • Median household income (~$41,000) is well below the national median.

  • Poverty rates are higher than average, and downtown revitalization is ongoing but uneven.

4. Limited Amenities & Entertainment

  • Shopping, dining, and entertainment options are modest — think small cafés, a few local shops, and basic stores.

  • For major hospitals, malls, or nightlife, residents often drive to Joplin, MO or Pittsburg, KS.

5. Older Housing Stock

  • Many homes are older and may require repairs or modernization.

  • New construction is limited, and resale value growth tends to be slow.
