1303 Midland Ave, Syracuse, NY 13205 $20,000 ~ Sold for $21k
OHU50K NOTES
You know how houses can give off vibes? Well, despite this fixer upper needing loads of work and the neighborhood it is in, I am getting a happy vibe off this home.
Too bad the woodwork is painted, but I appreciate the large sunlit rooms, high ceilings and tiled mantels.
The house is opposite Kirk Park, originally known as Kirkwood Driving Park, once the heart of horse racing and home to one of the best known half-mile tracks in the state of New York. It was founded by William B. Kirk in 1829, and by the 1890s was one of the city’s most popular entertainment venues with a grandstand, stables, picnic area and dance platform.
Anson Alrod, a extremely successful businessman who lived in this once higher middle class neighborhood just a few streets from our featured house today, owned and raced some of the fastest horses to ever come out of New York. You can see his stables at the back of his property below.
Sadly, the demise of the Kirkwood Driving Park came in July of 1902, when a fire destroyed the grandstand.
In 1910, the Syracuse Parks Commission took it over, and today Kirk Park features a playground, community center, softball field, swimming pool, softball field, basketball courts, tennis courts, and an outdoor roller-skating area.
Unlike the preservation of Kirk Park, I am afraid our featured home today will probably be a hard sell.
