The Pros of Living in Renovo

1. Rock-Bottom Cost of Living and Housing

If your primary goal is to buy a home outright or live on a fixed income, Renovo offers some of the cheapest real estate in the country. The median home value frequently hovers well under $50,000. Whether you are looking for a historic brick home in town or a hunting cabin just outside the borough, you can establish a life here for a fraction of what it costs almost anywhere else.

2. An Outdoor Lover’s Paradise

Renovo is completely surrounded by the rugged, beautiful Sproul State Forest. It is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. You have immediate access to world-class trout fishing, miles of ATV and snowmobile trails, extensive hunting grounds, and kayaking on the Susquehanna River. The town is also famous for its annual Flaming Foliage Festival, which draws thousands to celebrate the incredible autumn colors of the surrounding mountains.

3. Ultimate Seclusion and Peace

If you want to disconnect from the modern rat race, Renovo delivers. There are no traffic jams, no towering billboards, and very little noise pollution. The pace of life is incredibly slow, making it an ideal retreat for anyone who values privacy, quiet, and living close to nature.

4. Deep Appalachian History

The town was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the mid-1800s, and that history is still visible in the brick architecture and the layout of the town. There is a deep, generational pride among the locals who stay, creating a community where neighbors truly look out for one another in times of need.

The Cons of Living in Renovo

1. Severe Economic Decline and Lack of Jobs

The biggest hurdle to living in Renovo is making a living. When the railroad shops closed, the town’s economic engine disappeared. Today, the job market is virtually nonexistent, and the area struggles with high poverty rates. Unless you are retired, independently wealthy, or have a secure, fully remote job (and a reliable internet connection), finding local work is incredibly difficult.

2. Extreme Geographic Isolation

Renovo is beautifully isolated, but that isolation becomes a major logistical challenge. The town is accessed primarily by Route 120, a winding two-lane mountain highway. It takes about 45 minutes of driving just to reach the nearest larger town (Lock Haven) for major grocery runs, department stores, or standard commercial services. In the winter, when snow and ice hit the mountains, travel can become treacherous or impossible.

3. Limited Local Amenities and Healthcare

Within the borough, amenities are extremely limited. While there is a basic grocery store, a pharmacy, and a few local eateries, you will not find diverse dining or entertainment. More importantly, specialized healthcare is far away. In the event of a major medical emergency, residents often have to be transported by ambulance or helicopter to Lock Haven or Williamsport, which is a critical consideration for retirees or those with health conditions.

4. Aging Housing and Blight

While the homes are incredibly cheap, many of them suffer from decades of deferred maintenance. Buying a $30,000 house here often means taking on a $60,000 renovation project just to update aging plumbing, electrical wiring, and roofs. Additionally, because of the population decline, there are several blighted, abandoned properties scattered throughout the town, which can impact the overall aesthetic and neighborhood feel.
