Family History

This originally was the home of George Newton Elder (1859-1942), a coal dealer,  and his wife, Jessie. They lived in the home with their daughter, Gail, her husband Raymond Elder, and their three sons, as well as a servant girl. When George passed away in 1942, Gail inherited the house and continued to live in the home with the rest of the family. Her husband, Raymond L. James, a secretary for the Board of Education passed away at the age of 58 in 1945, and Gail married Edwin Vineer in 1948. The family remained in the home until Gail’s death in 1975.

Location of This Iowa Prairie Style Home For Sale

Mason City, Iowa, is a mid-sized city in northern Iowa, known for its strong musical heritage, architectural significance, and quality of life. Here’s a look at the pros and cons of living in or visiting Mason City:

Pros:

  1. Cultural and Musical Heritage:
    • Mason City is known as the hometown of composer Meredith Willson, creator of The Music Man. The town embraces this musical legacy with various festivals and attractions, such as the Meredith Willson Boyhood Home and Music Man Square.
  2. Architectural Significance:
    • The city has a strong connection to the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Historic Park Inn Hotel in Mason City is the last remaining hotel designed by Wright. His influence is also seen in other buildings, making the city a point of interest for architecture enthusiasts.
  3. Affordable Cost of Living:
    • Mason City offers a relatively low cost of living, with affordable housing options. This makes it an attractive option for families and retirees looking for a place with a good quality of life.
  4. Education and Healthcare:
    • The city has strong public schools and access to quality healthcare through MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, a regional hub for medical services.
  5. Outdoor Activities:
    • Mason City is surrounded by natural beauty, with access to parks, rivers, and lakes. Lime Creek Nature Center and East Park are popular spots for hiking, picnicking, and outdoor recreation.
  6. Active Community:
    • The city has a vibrant community with regular events, farmers markets, and local arts. The performing arts scene is also notable, with a community theater and a symphony orchestra.

Cons:

  1. Weather:
    • Mason City experiences cold winters, with heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. For those who aren’t accustomed to long, harsh winters, this can be a challenge.
  2. Limited Job Market:
    • While Mason City has some strong industries (healthcare, education, and manufacturing), the job market can be limited, especially for specialized or high-paying jobs. Many residents may need to commute or relocate for more diverse employment opportunities.
  3. Rural Location:
    • Mason City is relatively isolated, with the nearest major city being Minneapolis (about two hours north). While it’s a regional hub for northern Iowa, some may find the distance from larger metropolitan areas limiting in terms of shopping, entertainment, and dining options.
  4. Population Decline:
    • Like many Midwestern towns, Mason City has experienced some population decline as younger generations move to larger cities. This can affect local businesses and the vibrancy of the community.
  5. Limited Nightlife:
    • Mason City is a quieter, family-oriented community, so nightlife options like bars, clubs, and other entertainment venues are limited compared to larger cities.

Conclusion:

Mason City offers a mix of cultural charm, affordable living, and community-focused life, making it a great place for families, retirees, or those interested in music and architecture. However, its rural location, cold winters, and limited job market may not appeal to everyone.
