Location

This Arkansas fixer upper is located in De Queen, a small city located in southwestern Arkansas. It serves as the county seat of Sevier County. The city is situated approximately 130 miles southwest of Little Rock, the capital of Arkansas, and lies near the Oklahoma border.  De Queen has a population of around 6,600 people.

The origin of the name “De Queen” can be traced back to the Kansas City Southern Railroad, which played a significant role in the city’s development. In the late 1800s, the railroad was expanding its tracks into this part of Arkansas. The story goes that a railroad surveyor named F.W. Schuler was in the area, and when asked by a group of local residents about the name of the new town, he replied, “It’s your town; you can name it anything you want.” In response, a young girl named Janie Sevier, the daughter of J.G. Sevier, a prominent businessman, said, “Let’s name it De Queen after my little sister, who is the queen of our house.” The name was well-received, and the town was officially incorporated as De Queen on December 22, 1897.

Since its establishment, De Queen has primarily been an agricultural community. It was initially known for its timber and farming industries. Over time, poultry farming became an important economic activity in the area. De Queen’s location near the Cossatot River and the Ouachita Mountains also makes it attractive for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hunting, fishing, and hiking.

The city has a rich cultural heritage, influenced by the diverse groups of people who settled in the region. The population includes a mix of Mexican-American, African-American, and European-American residents. This cultural diversity is reflected in the local cuisine, traditions, and celebrations, such as the annual Sevier County Rodeo and the Mexican-American Fiesta Festiva.
