c.1920 Brick Handyman Special Bluefield WV $35K ~ Off Market

Some lovely original elements still exist in this handyman special in Bluefield, WV (pop. 10,447). The home actually looks pretty good with its French doors, hardwood floors, cast iron radiators, natural woodwork, vintage medicine cabinet and that wonderful brick fireplace.

Bluefield was founded in the early 18th century when two families made their way to the then rugged and remote part of what is now southern West Virginia. Other families gradually joined them, and a fort, mill, one-room schoolhouse and church was constructed. They named the town Bluefield for the purplish blue hue of the chicory flowers flowers that bloomed in the summers.

The town’s coal rush began in the 1880s and along with it the railroad. When tonnage was good the bustling area became known as “Little New York” and Millionaires’ Town.” The Great Depression, however, was extremely damaging to Bluefield. A series of fires swept through downtown destroying much of the city. WWII revived coal production, though, and the town became so important strategically that Adolf Hitler put Bluefield on his reputed list of German air raid targets in the United States.

When the Interstate Highway System was built in 1974, automobile traffic could now reach the top of the mountain. Dependence on the railroad then waned, causing a restructuring of the coal industry, jobs were lost and the population declined.

It is sad to think that a town once called Millionaires’ Town  is now depressed.  The economy is the reason why houses are cheap in Bluefield.
