In the late 1920s, this was the home of Martin Brakeman, his wife Alma, and Martin’s two stepsons Edward and Robert Schaechtele.  Albert, a general farm laborer, was Alma’s third husband. Yet Alma, who was originally from Oakland, California, was able to send both of her sons to college. Edward became a teacher after moving back to his family’s home town and raised a family in California. Robert stayed in Kansas and became a Baptist minister.
