You will have to look past all the stuff to discover what this handyman special has to offer. We old house owners slash yard sale addicts know that we can accumulate antiques and collectibles quickly, so we need to put organization over our passion for old things. Although the collection of depression glass is a keeper, this house is a case in point.
Consider, though, the lovely staircase, hardwood floors, leaded glass window, original kitchen cupboard and that fabulous bathroom tub! And how about that farmhouse sink on legs!?
My Sink Story
When we were in the restoration process of our 1915 American foursquare, every weekend my husband and I would go to all the Jersey Shore demo sales in Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Avalon and Ocean City. It was a crime all the old homes that were being knocked down for multi-million dollar second homes. But we did salvage so many beautiful built-ins and clawfoot tubs.
My idea was to recreate a retro free-standing kitchen in our home. So when we came across the same style sink as the one in our featured house today, my husband did all the disconnections from the demo home, lugged the sink home and installed it. I loved the look, but I could only live with it for a week. I shunned a dishwasher in my retro kitchen, but with seven kids, this old 4″-deep sink just didn’t cut it for all the dishes and large pots I had to wash. My husband uninstalled it.
The same went for a gorgeous 1929 mint green enamel Quality gas stove we found for $75. I couldn’t even fit a turkey or a full-sized cookie sheet in there! We kept it, just for looks and storage, in the kitchen, though. I love that stove despite its lack of functionality for a large family. How did they do it back then?!
