Town History
Coffeyville, Kansas, got its name from Colonel James A. Coffey, who was a prominent figure in the town’s early history.
Colonel Coffey was a land surveyor and a member of the Kansas Territorial Legislature. He played a significant role in the development of the area by promoting the construction of railroads and advocating for the establishment of a town in the region.
In 1869, when the Leavenworth, Lawrence & Galveston Railroad was being built through the area, Colonel Coffey offered a generous donation of land and money to the railroad company if they agreed to establish a station in the vicinity. The railroad company accepted his offer, and the station was named Coffeyville in his honor.
Over time, the town of Coffeyville grew around the railway station, attracting settlers and businesses. It became an important hub for trade and agriculture in southeastern Kansas.
