OHU50K NOTES

The small town of Drake, ND (pop. 275) is perhaps best known for two literary connections. In Dr. Seuss’s book Horton Hatches the Egg, Horton the Elephant visits the town of Drake while he is in the circus.  In addition, in 1973 Drake was the center of a book burning controversy. The school board had ordered that books considered obscene, namely Slaughterhouse Five and Deliverance, assigned to the sophomore English class, be confiscated and burned. The subsequent national controversy resulted in an out of court settlement, including permission for the work to be taught to high school juniors and seniors.
