Brentwood
Brentwood is a historic urban community with a vast collection of architecturally significant residential structures, primarily dominated by bungalows. Before the first quarter of the 20th century, the area was sparsely populated.
On May 3, 1901, within eight hours, a fire destroyed 2,300 buildings located on 148 Jacksonville blocks causing an estimated 15 million in property damage. While seven people lost their lives, 8,677 people were left homeless. The destruction caused by the fire ushered in a renewal of growth in the city referred to as the Jacksonville Renaissance (1901 – 1920). Scores of new subdivisions were platted, Brentwood being one of them, with the land for the subdivision being purchased by the Brentwood Realty Company in 1913.
Today most of Jacksonville has a dismal crime rate. In Florida, where prices are usually much higher, for homeowners Jacksonville is one of those places where there exists a trade-off between low prices/close beaches and crime.
