OHU50K NOTES

Broad-Kenan Historic District

This fixer upper bungalow was built around 1925 in Wilson’s Broad-Kenan Historic District. The district saw great growth in the early 1900s primarily due to tobacco wealth. Two men directly responsible for the district’s residential growth from this period into the 1920s were Jacob Tomlinson and Kirby Woodard. Both were very successful wholesale grocers who owned handsome dwellings on Broad Street, number 407 for Tomlinson and 404 for Woodard.  Tomlinson and Woodard partnered to develop real estate along Broad and Kenan Streets. Shortly after World War I, the pair built some of the district’s earliest bungalows; several rental houses on Kenan Street and of particular interest, the Robert Fulghum House at 600 Broad Street.

House History

The Robert Fulghum House is the sister house of our featured home today. Due to #600’s very close resemblance to #506, and that the name of the owner of #506 was Dr. Robert Lee Tomlinson (1889-1965), I would venture to say that our featured home is a Tomlinson-Woodard house. Robert L. Tomlinson was a dentist who lived in the home with his wife  Gertrude Parker Tomlinson (1890-1946) , and children Dorthea, Bettie and Robert Jr.  Robert Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps and also became a dentist, but he was attending University of North Carolina when a tragedy occurred at home.
Gertrude was enjoying a cool summer evening reading in her yard when she was shot by a stray bullet. She collapsed at the door of her sun parlor. Police believed the 22-calibre bullet may have been fired by a neighborhood youngster. Gertrude was just 56.
