OHU50K NOTES

Built in 1926, this fixer upper brick foursquare’s greatest assets are its fireplace with flanking bookcases and windows overhead, as well as the yellow and black tiled bathroom.  Those details give a hint of what this house was like in 1926. Unfortunately, dropped ceilings, old carpeting and linoleum flooring have covered up other details. The home will definitely need a new kitchen and some sprucing up, but the price isn’t unreasonable. Remember, with old houses under $50k, it is not what we see with our eyes, but what we visualize in our mind’s eye.

Town History

Alton (pop. 27,865) is about 18 miles north of Saint Louis, Missouri. Alton was established as a river town in 1818 by Rufus Easton, who named it after his son.  The city was the site of the last Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas presidential debate in October 1858, and the old state penitentiary there was used during the Civil War to hold 12,000 Confederate prisoners of war.

Alton has many homes built in the Victorian Queen Anne style, representing a prosperous period in the city’s history. The commercial area, located at the top of the hill overlooking the Mississippi River, boasts several stone churches and a city hall. They represent the Alton’s wealth based on the success of river traffic, manufacturing and shipping.
