OHU50K NOTES

Here is a cute bungalow for sale in Middlesboro, a town of about 10,300 residents in southeastern Kentucky.
The city has gone through many incarnations. With the area’s iron ore deposits in mind, engineer and entrepreneur Alexander Arthur was able to convince some of the wealthy of Gilded-Age Asheville, North Carolina, to fund a “Pittsburgh of the South.” When financing did not meet expectations, Alexander traveled to England, where he was able to find backers for his “Magic City” of 250,000 residents “enjoying running water, electricity, a large sporting commons, and electric trams in the middle of Appalachia.”

In the 1930s, Middlesboro was known as “Little Las Vegas.”  Per Wikipedia,“Middlesboro was full of slot machines, saloons, and brothels. During this period, shootouts in the streets were part of daily life. The town, under rule of the infamous Ball brothers, was featured in newspapers across the country as one of the deadliest, wildest cities in the United States.”

Jumping to the 1950s, Middlesboro had 15,ooo residents. Their strong support for the arts and culture led to the name “the Athens of the Mountains.”
