This fixer upper is located on a tree-lined street in historic Selma, Alabama. Selma has a wealth of beautiful old homes, and with some work our featured home will be counted among them.

Family History

Milton and Ola Shreve Isaacs owned the home in 1930 and the family resided there throughout the 1940s. Milton founded the Selma Delicatessen in partnership with his brother in 1927. He is credited with inventing a radish-based condiment. Sadly, while sitting alone in his bedroom at 421 Young Street (the newspaper erroneously stated 421 King St), committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest in 1939 at the age of 40. Ola and a servant, who were working in the kitchen at the time, found him.  His funeral was held at home, 421 Young Street. Ola continued to live in the house after her husband’s death along with her 19 year-old son, TJ Wells from a previous relationship, who was a college student and salesman for a tire company.  The house was valued at $6,500 per the 1940 US Census.

Here are some further details about Milton Isaacs. Milton and Ola Shreve were married in June 1934. By the time Milton shot himself in December 1939 he had been divorced from Ola Shreve and had remarried to Laura (Threadgill) Wells in January 1939. It was Laura who had a son (Thomas Jeffereson Wells, changed from Taylor Jackson Starr) from her first marriage. Thanks for the write-up, it’s interesting to see photos of their home in Selma.
